Stitched & capped-resist on reversed ground

Technique: Saka-boushi Shibori – The reverse of boushi shibori, also known as tako-boushi (octopus-shaped capped resist), where the ground rather than the motif is capped to keep the ground white. This process resembles oke-shibori, tub-resist dyeing, where the fabric is placed in a container and only the patterns are exposed to receive dyes. Process illustrations are from the book Shibori: The Inventive Art of Japanese Shaped Resist Dyeing by Wada, Rice, and Barton. (c)1983

Pattern: Circles, when formed by the boushi shibori technique, they have distinctive soft outlines that cannot be produced in any other way. The insides of the circles also record the way the cloth was manipulated into a 3-D shape to resist dye and create the tactile quality of the shibori pattern. Color: Dark blue/White
